You’ve just poured yourself a fresh cup of coffee—two creamers, one sugar, and a small spoonful of cinnamon, just how you like it. As you go to take that first rejuvenating sip, panic suddenly sets in; you’re still wearing your Invisalign trays. You’re not a morning person, and without that cup of coffee, your workday looks futile. Although you should avoid drinking most beverages, including piping hot coffee, while wearing your Invisalign trays, you don’t necessarily have to give up that morning cup of Joe.
Why Can’t I Drink Coffee While Wearing My Invisalign Trays?
You should avoid most beverages while wearing your Invisalign trays. Although both tap and bottled water are perfectly fine, many other beverages contain ingredients that can stain and discolor your Invisalign trays, much like how they stain your actual teeth. Coffee is particularly acidic, not to mention the other sugary ingredients that are often added, and the risk of tooth decay is greatly increased when you drink coffee while wearing your trays. Additionally, your Invisalign trays are composed of a heat-sensitive thermoplastic, which can easily warp and become damaged when exposed to hot beverages. Because of the complications that hot beverages, especially coffee, can create, it is in your best interest to avoid enjoying them while wearing your Invisalign trays.
Do I Have to Give Up Coffee Entirely During My Invisalign Treatment?
Although you should not drink coffee while wearing your Invisalign trays, that does not mean you have to give up coffee entirely—there are many ways to still enjoy it while preserving your Invisalign treatment.
Take Out Your Trays – If you want to drink a cup of coffee or any beverage other than water, take out and properly store your Invisalign trays, ideally in their carrying case. Not only will this protect your trays from the damaging liquid, but also from other elements.
Quick Consumption and Less Sugar – Since you’ll need to wear your Invisalign trays frequently during treatment (for weeks and months at a time), you should drink your coffee quickly, rather than sipping it over the course of an hour. Finish it within half an hour so you can resume wearing your trays. When possible, try to reduce or eliminate how much cream or sugar you’re adding; this will reduce the risk of cavities, as well as bacteria growth on your trays.
Brush or Rinse After – While you should be brushing your teeth daily anyway, it is in your best interest to brush your teeth soon after drinking coffee. You should also rinse off your trays prior to putting them back in your mouth. This will also help to reduce the risk of tooth decay and bacterial growth.
If you love coffee and can’t fathom a life without it, take heart in knowing that receiving Invisalign treatment will not prevent you from enjoying your fix—as long as you are careful.
