Reducing Your Risk of Infection & Other Oral Problems
While not everyone has wisdom teeth, people who do have one or more of the third molars will likely need to undergo extraction in order to prevent or heal impaction, infection, or crowding of the surrounding teeth. Young patients may benefit from a wisdom tooth evaluation in their early teens, in which we take X-rays to check for the presence of the third molars. Evergreen Dental Group provides comfortable extraction for problematic wisdom teeth. We welcome patients from Evergreen and the surrounding areas of Golden, Idaho Springs, Conifer, and Bailey. Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Not everybody needs to have their wisdom teeth removed, but for some patients, having them extracted could drastically reduce the risk of several problems, including:
- Misalignment caused by there not being enough room for your wisdom teeth to grow in.
- Cysts that can form and damage the jaw.
- Increased risk of infection.
- Increased risk of oral health problems, such as cavities.
After we examine the images of your mouth, we’ll determine what risks your wisdom teeth could present and discuss them with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Some patients are lucky enough to have wisdom teeth that erupt properly, fit comfortably in the jaw, and can be cleaned effectively. In these cases, extraction may not be necessary. However, most patients benefit from extraction because their wisdom teeth are impacted, misaligned, or pose a risk to surrounding teeth. During your evaluation at our Evergreen, CO office, we'll take digital X-rays to assess your wisdom teeth and recommend extraction only when it's truly in your best interest.
What's the best age to have wisdom teeth removed?
The ideal age for wisdom tooth extraction is typically between 17 and 25, when the roots are not yet fully developed and the surrounding bone is less dense. Removing wisdom teeth at this younger age leads to easier procedures, faster healing, and a lower risk of complications. We recommend that teens have a wisdom tooth evaluation in their early teen years so we can monitor development and plan extraction at the optimal time if needed.
Does wisdom tooth extraction hurt?
No. We use local anesthetic to completely numb the area before the procedure, so you shouldn't feel pain during the extraction. For patients with dental anxiety or those requiring more complex surgical extractions, we offer sedation options including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation to ensure maximum comfort. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the entire experience is.
How long does it take to recover from wisdom tooth extraction?
Most patients feel significantly better within three to five days, with full healing of the gum tissue taking about one to two weeks. Complete bone healing can take several months but doesn't typically affect your daily life. We recommend taking it easy for the first 48 hours, eating soft foods for several days, and avoiding strenuous activity until you feel back to normal. Plan to take a few days off school or work after your procedure.
What can I eat after wisdom tooth extraction?
For the first 24 to 48 hours, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (eaten with a spoon, not a straw), mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, and broth-based soups. Avoid hot foods and beverages, anything crunchy or hard, spicy foods, popcorn, nuts, and seeds that could get stuck in the extraction site. Gradually return to your normal diet over the following week as you feel comfortable.
What is a dry socket, and how do I prevent it?
A dry socket is a painful complication that occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged before the area has fully healed, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. To prevent dry socket, avoid smoking, using straws, spitting forcefully, or rinsing vigorously for at least 72 hours after extraction. Symptoms include severe throbbing pain a few days after surgery, bad breath, and an unpleasant taste. If you suspect a dry socket, contact our Evergreen office right away for treatment.
What aftercare instructions should I follow?
After your extraction, bite down on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes to control bleeding, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed, eat soft foods, avoid straws and smoking for at least 72 hours, sleep with your head slightly elevated, and rinse gently with warm salt water starting 24 hours after surgery. Our team will provide detailed personalized aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
