Even if you don’t aren’t an active TikTok user, you’ve probably at least heard of it or seen videos reposted on other forms of social media. Though the wild popularity of TikTok means there are abundant opportunities to disperse useful information, it is also home to a range of dangerous dental trends, including, the “Veneers Check”. This trend was most popular near the end of 2020, and many dentists were warning against it. Read on to learn more about what made this trend so unsafe and how it caused people to make permanent mistakes to their pearly whites.

What Is the “Veneers Check” Trend?

So, what exactly does the “veneers check” trend entail? When someone participates in this trend, they show off their natural teeth in a filed-down state before getting the procedure done. The appearance of the filed down teeth can be quite jarring, and this can scare away potential patients.

This trend spread a lot of misleading information about how the veneers procedure works. While a small amount of tooth enamel needs to be removed for veneers to better adhere, the teeth aren’t filed down as much as the TikToks imply. One dentist and TikToker explained that the shape of the teeth portrayed in the videos is more consistent with crowns, not veneers. They also stated that there’s a big difference between the two procedures.

The Difference Between Crowns and Veneers

Both veneers and crowns improve the look of a tooth, but veneers are for cosmetic purposes and crowns are restorative. Veneers are thin shells made out of porcelain that adhere to the front surface of the tooth and can close small gaps between teeth, correct minor misalignment issues, and cover discoloration or chips.

Dental crowns are caps that are fitted over a damaged or decayed tooth that has been filed down for them to fit. They are commonly used after a patient gets a root canal to protect and repair the weakened tooth. Dentists are also unlikely to recommend a dental crown unless the tooth has been seriously compromised.

Why the “Veneers Check” Trend Is Dangerous

The misinformation this trend is spreading is bad enough, but it’s also encouraging TikTok users to permanently alter their teeth by undergoing this procedure. Both crowns and veneers are irreversible, so it’s incredibly important to think through your decision before proceeding with either treatment. Speak with your dentist so they can recommend the best method to achieve your desired results and maintain the integrity of your smile.

Next time you see an interesting trend on TikTok, make sure to do your research so you know that you aren’t doing anything harmful. Dentists have years of experience in the dental health field, so always consult them to learn what’s best for your smile.
